Larry Hymowitz AKA “The WIZARD”
I met Larry as with most of the North East Chapter Guys through the V*Buick.com Forum.
Anyone who has EVER had a problem with their Buick....NEEDS to know Larry! No matter what the question is, from valve lash to correct SN parts Larry is always there with an answer, and you might as well bet that he is right! I personally believe Larry has more Buick part numbers and specs memorized than anyone out there....but dont take my word for it....ask him yourself on the forum!
Here is some of Larry’s story in his own words...
I bought the car in 1999 from a mechanic (also a N.E. Chapter member at the time). He had spent 8 years body off the frame restoring the car. He had more dollars in parts in the car than I paid for it. He had done a very nice job overall. POR-15 the frame, and underbody. All new Body and suspension bushings. All new brake and fuel lines. Rebuilt motor with KB118 cam and MT headers. He had used some parts on the engine that were from different years and didn't replace some parts. The headlight bezels were pitted so he painted them. The brake booster was kind of sorry looking, and the master cylinder was the square style which was incorrect. The original engine block was cracked, and the BB transmission was long gone. He had used an SF block and rebuilt it with Forged SpeedPro pistons. The Transmission was a 1967 BT switch pitch. Car still had the original 8.2 10 bolt Posi with 3.42's. The car had an incorrect beige vinyl roof. Paint was new laquer. It was an OK job. The bodywork could have been better, but it had 2 new fenders. The car had the wrong carburetor (Q-jet from a 71 SBB) I replaced it with a John Osborne 1972 800 CFM Q-jet. I also bolted on a new GSCA 2 1/2" exhaust with Walker 17749 mufflers. I later added a Dr. Gas X pipe. Replaced the Stinger S-4 Ignition with a converted points distributor (Dave Ray MSD trigger) and MSD Digital 6 Box. At 4200 lbs, my best time was 13.22@ 101.1 MPH.
Some of the things I've replaced or changed over the years. I bought brand new reproduction Buick Rallye wheels. Replaced the brake booster with a reproduction unit, and replaced the master cylinder with a rebuilt correct unit. Changed the 1972 Power Steering pump and brackets with the correct 1970 style. Went to a 12:1 rebuilt steering gear. Replaced the vinyl roof with the correct dark brown color. Recovered both front buckets. Replaced the 67 switch pitch valve body with a 71 big car unit. I then went to TA Stage1 SE aluminum heads done by Greg Gessler. They flow 313/225 @ .550 lift Added a TA SP1 intake. Added a Gear Vendors overdrive and replaced the entire rear with a 1971 8.5 10 bolt upgraded with 30 spline Moser axles and matching Eaton Posi. Gears were 3.73. On 26" MT ET Street Drag Radials, my best time went to 12.200 @110.65 MPH with the Q-jet, and 12.119 @ 111.98 MPH with an AED 1000 HO Holley type carburetor.
This past October, I used 28" MT's and went 12.21@ 110.00 MPH with the Q-jet. Engine idles at 750 RPM in gear with 16-17" of vacuum. With the GV overdrive engaged, 60 MPH is at 2150 RPM. Last year at the Nats, I gave Rusty Davenport my rear bumper which was in dire need of a rechroming. He added the N25 openings, and sent it to Tri City Plating. I got it back in October, and added Stainless N25 tips from Dennis Wheeler.
And one last parting shot...leaving Yardley’s Picnic....
